When
you receive your fresh arrangement, it should be placed
in a cool spot out of direct sunlight and away from heating
and cooling vents. Adding fresh water daily will give your
flowers several more days of life. Once the water level
has dropped below a cut stem, you must re-cut the flower
stem exposed in order for the flower to take up food and
water again.
If
you receive a wrapped bouquet, you should immediately re-cut
the stems, using clean, sharp clippers, a knife, or scissors
at an angle. Before placing the stems in the vase, remove
any leaves that will fall below the water line. Place the
freshly cut stems in a clean vase with cold to room temperature
water and the package of flower food that has been provided
for you.
The
floral food is a combination of additives that help to nourish
the flowers and discourage bacteria from growing in the
water. It is one of the best–and easiest–ways
to extend the life of your flowers. It is very important
to follow the directions on the package correctly. Improperly
mixed floral food can do more harm than good.
If
your flowers have woody stems and branches (such as Quince,
Forsythia, or Lilac), cut the stem with sharp pruning shears
and place in warm water containing fresh floral food to
promote flower opening.
